Wheaton
Wheaton, 23 miles west of the Loop, was named an All-American city in 1968. It is
a well-established community with a blend of rich heritage and individual character.
It is the county seat of DuPage.
Wheaton, with over 30 churches, is an important international center of religious
activity. Wheaton Park District maintains 47 parks which covers almost 800 acres. There are 750 programs, including crafts,
athletic training, senior citizens activities, and art classes. Northside Pool on
the city's northern edge maintains 10,000 square feet of water. Rice Pool and Water
Park has a capacity of 2,000 entrants.
There is also the Cosley Animal Farm and Museum, which informs the visitor about the
types of domestic and wild farm animals. It also maintains an old train depot, an
antique railroad caboose, a barn more than 125 years old, and several horse drawn
vehicles.
In addition, Wheaton is the home of the DuPage County Fairgrounds. It is close to
Morton Arboretum and other recreational and educational facilities and areas.
Wheaton College is located in the city. District 200 serves both elementary and
High School students. Wheaton-Warrenville South and Wheaton North are the two area
high schools. Students who live 1.5 miles or more from school are provided free bus
transportation to the school they are assigned to attend. The District operates 12
elementary schools (grades K-5), three middle schools (grades K-5), three middle
schools (grades 6-8), and two high schools (grades 9-12). There are many private
schools in the area as well, including: Wheaton Christian High School; Wheaton Christian
Grammar School; St. John Lutheran; St. Francis High School; St. Michael Elementary School.
