The history of our village can be traced back for more than a century.
What we now call Hinsdale was once called Brush Hill and later Fullersburg.
Established by early pioneers seeking higher ground, they came from the shores of
Lake Michigan following the Old Black Hawk Indian Trail to what is now DuPage County and
the western edge of Cook County.
William Robins, "the Father of Hinsdale," bought 6,400 acres
of land in 1862 and a village was born. Not only did Robbins plan and build streets,
he also planted thousands of young shade trees, many of which still shade our streets
today. The community became known as Hinsdale on April 3, 1873 with a population of
about 500; today, it is home to about 17, 000.
More than a century later, our tree-lined streets with their gracious
and quiet elegance reflect the hard work, planning and persistence of our
forefathers. We believe those hardy pioneers who envisioned a thriving
community here would be pleased to know their dreams have been handled with care from
generation to generation and that their village today successfully combines the charm of
the past with the vitality of the future.
In these days of impersonal service, Hinsdale's businesses provide our
residents with complete services in a warm, caring and professional manner.
Along with this thriving business community, the newcomer will find a choice in schools,
churches and hospitals to satisfy most. We have a well-organized village government with
both fire and police services. Our parks provide residents with facilities that
forgot everything from baseball and basketball to swimming and tennis, as well as a place
to picnic or go for a walk.
